Website design cost in Charlotte: what a small business pays

The second bill is the one most quotes leave out

Website design cost in Charlotte comes down to two numbers: what you pay to build the site, and what you pay every month to keep it up. With us the build is $399 for up to five pages and the monthly plan starts at $199. The rest of this post explains what sits behind them, what pushes any quote up, and what to ask a shop before you sign.

About 110 people a month across North and South Carolina type "how much does a website cost" into Google. Most of the answers they find quote the first bill and go quiet on the second.

The two bills every website has

The build

Somebody lays out the pages, writes or tidies the words, hooks up the form and the tap-to-call button, tests it on a phone and puts it live on your domain. That is a one-time charge nearly everywhere.

Keeping it running

Hosting. The SSL certificate. Software and security updates. Backups. Someone to change the hours when you start closing early on Fridays, or swap a price when material costs move. Those costs exist whether or not anyone invoices you for them, and a site nobody maintains eventually breaks or gets hacked.

When you compare quotes, add the two bills together over two or three years. Two quotes that look far apart on day one can swap places by year three.

What pushes the price up

Pages

Five pages (home, services, about, reviews, contact) is a different job from thirty. The Palmetto Painting Contractors rebuild we launched in Mount Pleasant on October 6, 2026, with ByteZero, ran to 33 pages. More pages means more layout, more writing and more testing on phones. Five good pages often do for a one-crew business. Calls from six towns need more.

Who writes the words

Writing is usually the slowest part of a website project. Hand over finished copy and the job moves fast. If the designer has to interview you, learn your trade and write every page from scratch, that is real hours and it belongs in the price.

Features

Online booking, payments, an estimate calculator, a customer login, a store. Each one adds setup and testing, and each one needs a reason. Would your customers use it, or would a phone number and a short form do the same work? For most trades the form wins.

Photos

Your own photos of finished jobs beat stock every time. A phone full of them costs nothing extra. No photos at all means budgeting for a shoot, or a few job-site afternoons before launch.

Search work

Page titles, descriptions, speed and a connected Google Business Profile should come with any build. Ongoing work such as blog posts, backlinks and city pages is a monthly service, and over a few years that is where most of the total sits. Our local SEO page lays out what each plan includes.

Four ways to get a site

Do it yourself

The lowest cash price and the highest time price. Most owners we talk to got halfway through a builder, then went back to running jobs.

A freelancer

Often good value. The question is what happens after launch. Who hosts it, who fixes it when an update breaks the menu, and what happens if they take a full-time job next spring.

An agency

A discovery phase, a team, a longer timeline, a retainer. For a three-truck HVAC company it is often more than the job needs, and the monthly fee can be hard to tie back to calls.

A local flat-rate shop

That is where we sit. One set price for the build, one set monthly price after, and a mockup before either.

Our website design cost, stated plainly

  • Design and launch: $399 one time, up to five pages, then $60 for each extra page.
  • Care, $199 a month: hosting, SSL, maintenance and security updates, the content changes you send us, basic SEO, and your Google Business Profile kept current. Up to six pages. No backlinks on this plan.
  • Grow, $499 a month: adds Google Business Profile optimization, 3 backlinks a month, 10 tracked keywords and 2 blog posts a month. Up to 12 pages.
  • Lead, $999 a month: adds city pages, 6 backlinks, 20 tracked keywords, 8 posts a month, social posting and a full AI search strategy. Up to 17 pages plus city pages.

Anything bigger is quoted. Before any invoice we design a free website mockup of your homepage, so you see the thing before you pay for it. Care keeps the site healthy; it will not move your rankings much. Grow and Lead are where the search work lives.

Already have a site with sound bones? A website redesign is priced the same way as a new build. Trades with many service and town pages: start at contractor website design.

Questions to ask before you sign

  1. What is the total for the first year, build plus monthly?
  2. Who owns the domain? It should be registered in your name.
  3. If I leave, can I take the site or its content with me?
  4. Who makes changes after launch, and how long do they take?
  5. Is hosting included, and who fixes it if the site goes down on a Saturday?
  6. Can I see sites you built for a business like mine?

If a quote cannot answer those in plain English, keep looking. There is a longer version of this list in how to choose a web designer.

In short

  • Every site has two bills: the build, and the monthly upkeep.
  • Pages, writing, features, photos and search work are what move the price.
  • With us: $399 to launch up to five pages, then $199, $499 or $999 a month.
  • Compare quotes on the three-year total, not the first invoice.

FAQ

How much does a website cost for a small business in Charlotte?

It depends on pages, writing, features and what happens after launch. With us, $399 designs and launches up to five pages, then a plan from $199 a month covers hosting, updates and your Google Business Profile. Extra pages are $60 each. The small business website design page has the plan details side by side.

Why do website quotes vary so much?

They cover different things. One includes writing, hosting and a year of updates. Another is layout only, with everything else billed later. Line them up on the first-year total.

Do I have to pay monthly for a website?

Something has to cover hosting, the SSL certificate and updates. You can pay those separately and do the work yourself, or bundle them into a plan so someone is on the hook when the site breaks.

How long does it take to build a small business website?

Mostly it depends on how fast photos and details come back to us.

Is a cheap website a bad idea?

Only if it is built badly. A site with no phone button on the first screen, no reviews and a form that emails a dead inbox is the expensive one, because it loses you jobs.
